Community Access (CAP) Funding Cuts

Thanks to Harper's Gov't., funding through Industry Canada has been cut. Learning Centres and Community Access Sites in Public Libraries across this country are affected. Industry Canada said that "their objectives have been met". Rural areas are affected, rural public libraries are affected. The loss of this funding for OSM Public Library--$10,000 a year--a huge chunk. The loss to our communities in rural Ontario is huge. Affordable, accessible high speed Internet in rural Ontario is lost. The cost of "trying" to maintain a level of standard in technology in rural public libraries will be passed on to our patrons. March 6th Pre School Story Time

Story Time @ Keene Public Library
This week's book is:
The Old Steam Train by Heather Amery & Stephen Cartwright

The Boot Family helps the Old Steam Train and the Station to work again.

This book supports the
reading skill: Print Awareness: "Children with print awareness understand that print has different functions depending on the context in which it appears – for example, menus list food choices, a book tells a story, a sign can announce a favorite restaurant or warn of danger. Print awareness is understanding that print is organized in a particular way – for example, knowing that print is read from left to right and top to bottom. It is knowing that words consist of letters and that spaces appear between words. Print awareness is a child's earliest introduction to literacy." http://www.readingrockets.org/teaching/reading101/printawareness

November 1st, 2011 Story Time @ Keene Library

This weeks story is:
The Story Blanket, by Ferida:

Babba Zarrah lives in a tiny village in the snow-covered mountains. The children love to visit her. They settle down on her big, old story blanket and listen to her imaginative tales. One day Babba Zarrah notices that Nikolai needs new socks, but she has no yarn. Every question has an answer, Babba Zarrah tells herself, I just have to find it. After the children leave, she unravels part of her story blanket and knits him some nice warm socks.

Not long after that, the postman is surprised to find a scarf wrapped around his mailbag. The grocer mysteriously receives a shawl to keep her warm. On the woodpile outside the school is a pair of mittens for the schoolmaster. Meanwhile, the story blanket is getting smaller and smaller. When the villagers discover Babba Zarrah s secret, they decide to give her a surprise of her own.

This week's reading skill is: Print Motivation
Print Motivation is a child's interest in and enjoyment of books.  Children who enjoy books and reading at an early age will read more and be interested in reading as they get older.

Develop your child’s print motivation by:

• Reading together often and making it fun

• Making sure you and your child are in good moods before reading

• Stopping the story when your child becomes tired or loses interest

• Modelling reading for pleasure by reading a book, magazine or newspaper that
   you enjoy

Today's Songs

Deck the Halls with Poison Ivy
(sung to Deck the Halls)

Deck the halls with poison ivy,
fa la la la la, la la la la.
'Tis the season to be slimy,
fa la la la la, la la la la.
Don we now our strange apparel,
fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Troll the ancient Halloween carol,
fa la la la la, la la la la.
See the goblins rise before us,
fa la la la la, la la la la.
As we sing the Halloween chorus,
fa la la la la, la la la la.
Follow them as they ascend,
fa la la, la la la, la la la.
Join with all your loony friends,
fa la la la la, la la la la.

 In the Graveyard
(sung to My Darling, Clementine)

In the graveyard,
In the graveyard
When the moon
Begins to shine
There's a doctor,
Crazy doctor
And his monster,
Frankenstein.
Oh, my monster,
Oh, my monster
Oh, my monster,
Frankenstein
You are very,
Very scary
Don't come near me,
Frankenstein.

  Halloweeny Spider
(sung to Eensy Weensy Spider)

The Halloweeny spider crawled in the witch's house.
In came the witch and swept the spider out.
Out came the moon and she rode off on her broom,
And the Halloweeny spider crawled in her house again.
