Tuesday Summer Reading Program

Tuesday August 18 2015
10 a.m. Ages 0-6
Play Under the Sea
Cost $2.00 per Child
Our story this week is The Fish Who Could Wish by John Bush.   Deep in the ocean lives a fish whose wishes come true! He wishes for all sorts of crazy things - a castle, a car, and even fine clothes to wear. But he is a rather foolish fish and one day he wishes to be just like all the other fish . . . perhaps this will be the one wish he wishes he never wished! The rhythmical text is great to read aloud and Korky Paul's illustrations take to you to a crazy underwater world. With its neat punchline, this is a book that children will just love to hear (and join in with) over and over again.

Today is our last day for summer reading program.  Thank you to all who have participated in our weekly fun.

We will be taking next week off from story time.  Our regular story time will resume Tuesday September 1st.  at 10 a.m.

This week's book

Meow said the cow, Emma Dodd
A hilarious send-up of animal sounds!
It's a noisy morning in the barnyard: roosters crowing, cows mooing, mice squeaking! And the farmer's cat has had enough. With a flick of his tail, the cat casts a spell and the barnyard is turned upside-down. The chickens are oinking, the sheep are barking, and the sheepdog can only let out a confused "Baa?" It's not long before the animals figure out who's to blame...
Emma Dodd's bright, bold illustrations bring this farm full of very confused animals to life, and her hilarious rhyming text is sure to send young readers giggling (and mooing, and cock-a-doodle-dooing!).

Skills: Print Awareness, Vocabulary and Phonological.

Print Awareness:
"Children with print awareness understand that print has different functions depending on the context in which it appears – for example, menus list food choices, a book tells a story, a sign can announce a favorite restaurant or warn of danger. Print awareness is understanding that print is organized in a particular way – for example, knowing that print is read from left to right and top to bottom. It is knowing that words consist of letters and that spaces appear between words. Print awareness is a child's earliest introduction to literacy." http://www.readingrockets.org/teaching/reading101/printawareness

Vocabulary Awareness
Knowing the names of things.

Phonological Awareness:
Being able to hear and play with the smaller sounds in words.

Pre School Story Time - March 22, 2011- This week's book...

A Flock of Shoes by Sarah Tsiang

At the end of summer, Abby refuses to give up her sandals despite all her mother’s reasons for letting them go. But while Abby’s playing at the park, swinging higher and higher, her flip-flops slip off her feet and fly away, joining other sandals headed southward in a V formation. At first, she grudgingly puts on boots and wears them all winter, though she imagines her sandals vacationing at the beach and sending her fond postcards. Spring brings two more footwear-related surprises for Abby.

This book promotes phonological awareness.

Phonological awareness is the awareness of all of the sounds of language. It is the ability to hear and distinguish sounds. This includes: Recognizing sounds, Adding sounds, Taking apart sounds, Moving sounds around.

Why is it important for children to have these skills? Phonological and phonemic awareness help children become prepared to learn how letters and sounds go together into words. This makes it much easier for someone to learn to read and write!
Weak skills in phonological awareness are a primary cause for reading difficulties.
