This week's book

Meow said the cow, Emma Dodd
A hilarious send-up of animal sounds!
It's a noisy morning in the barnyard: roosters crowing, cows mooing, mice squeaking! And the farmer's cat has had enough. With a flick of his tail, the cat casts a spell and the barnyard is turned upside-down. The chickens are oinking, the sheep are barking, and the sheepdog can only let out a confused "Baa?" It's not long before the animals figure out who's to blame...
Emma Dodd's bright, bold illustrations bring this farm full of very confused animals to life, and her hilarious rhyming text is sure to send young readers giggling (and mooing, and cock-a-doodle-dooing!).

Skills: Print Awareness, Vocabulary and Phonological.

Print Awareness:
"Children with print awareness understand that print has different functions depending on the context in which it appears – for example, menus list food choices, a book tells a story, a sign can announce a favorite restaurant or warn of danger. Print awareness is understanding that print is organized in a particular way – for example, knowing that print is read from left to right and top to bottom. It is knowing that words consist of letters and that spaces appear between words. Print awareness is a child's earliest introduction to literacy." http://www.readingrockets.org/teaching/reading101/printawareness

Vocabulary Awareness
Knowing the names of things.

Phonological Awareness:
Being able to hear and play with the smaller sounds in words.

 This week's book.

Trouble with Bubbles by Frank B. Edwards & John Bianchi

After the animals at the zoo complain of being dirty, they ask the zookeeper for her help in getting a bath. Each animal uses a bar of soap, and soon the zoo is overwhelmed with bubbles. Bianchi and Edwards once again create a hilarious and silly story from one of children's favorite themes--bath time.

This book uses vocabulary and print awareness skills.

Weather permitting the children will go outside and blow bubbles.

New In: Children's Non Fiction

New in children's non fiction: Highway of Heroes by Kathy Stinson. From the moment I opened this book I got goose bumps. A moving account of a little boy's experience at the loss of his father, a soldier killed in action overseas. He and his mother travel the stretch of Highway 401 between Trenton and Toronto, called the Highway of Heroes, marking the route of fallen soldiers who return to Canada. This photographic picture book pays tribute to the sacrifices of those Canadian men and women in our armed forces and their families, while highlighting the remarkable patriotism of Canadian citizens who honour them.

This book uses vocabulary, phonological awareness and print awareness skills.
Book list  - Celebrating Fathers

Our tree named Steve by Alan Zweibel

Dear Kids, A long time ago, when you were little, Mom and I took you to where we wanted to build a house. . . . I remember there was one tree, however, that the three of you couldn't stop staring at. . . .

After the family spares him from the builders, Steve the tree quickly works his way into their lives. He holds their underwear when the dryer breaks down, he's there when Adam and Lindsay get their first crushes, and he's the centerpiece at their outdoor family parties. With a surprising lack of anthropomorphizing, this is a uniquely poignant celebration of fatherhood, families, love, and change.

You can do anything, daddy! By Michael Rex

At bedtime a little boy asks, Daddy, if I got taken by pirates would you save me? This sets off a series of different scenarios, as the pirates morph into gorillas, robots, and robot like creatures from Mars. As the father gives chase, the obstacles he encounters include jungles, cliffs, tigers, snakes, and vultures. Once the son is rescued, another round of questions describes the medical procedures and equipment (bandages and apple juice, primarily) that would heal the father after his adventures.

Pajama Light by Gale Sypher Jacob

Join a little girl and her father as they take their regular nighttime stroll to a nearby lighthouse in this soothing bedtime book. Gale Sypher Jacob's subtle rhyming text highlights the tenderness and warmth of a loving father-daughter relationship.

Friday my radio flyer flew by Zachary Pullen

What do you do with an old red wagon? Well, that depends. If the wagon in question is a strust old Radio Flyer discovered while exploring the attic with your dad, and if you have a penchant for flying machines, then you may have just found the perfect way to get your dreams off the ground.

That's how you play soccer daddy! by Sherry Shahan

In a reversal of the usual competitive sports message, a parent teaches his son to just have fun. At soccer practice, Coach yells, Drill! Drill! Drill! and when the team leaves, she reminds them to Practice! Practice! Practice! for the big game next week. Team captain Mikey is totally driven: We have to win, win, win! Crowds of moms and dads shout from the stands except for Mikey's dad. He wants to have fun with his son, and the two set winning aside to roll in the grass with their puppy, a belly tickle, a belly chickle.
